Orion

Orion watches
one girl walking quietly
through empty darkness
heart jumping wild in time with
tambourine nightmares
an ugly memory stalks
through the night just behind her
She doesn’t look back
Can’t bear to know if it’s there
trusting Orion
his arrow always pointed
ready to defend
twinkling promise of safety
just as real as any other.

there was a gun on the bedside table
out of bullets, out of reach

but only purple/gold sparks flew out

the pounding in my head said
