wide open eyes yelling secrets
directed at an empty face
that doesn’t care
but easily overheard
by anyone who wasn’t blinking

he passes his drink
through the thick air
between us four
and I have a long pull
to cover my lack of input

the words ring in my mind
especially when life is not good
and I’ve not held up my end
but things still didn’t fall apart
because
someone who loves me was standing in
keeping things running
full of faith in my return

for those fragile sentiments

changed from regard to regardless

We laughed like hyenas
the kind of laugh made for those who can’t cry.
We laughed about rape
and incest
and the death of her parents.
We laughed desperately
until we couldn’t breathe.
We laughed crazily
and couldn’t stop.
We laughed away the words
