beating

the poem won't write itself this morning
         I am pushing and pulling words and structures--
                        reluctant sentences,
                 wondering if its worth all this work
                                to put together just so
                                      the perfect ensemble
                                          of sounds and rhythms
                             a cast of definitions and meaningful punctuation--

                        ~words~

                   describing
            a dead horse.
